Bonfire and fireworks bonanza in Greater Manchester this weekend

If you are looking to celebrate Bonfire Night in Greater Manchester this weekend, Salford has it covered from tonight through to Saturday 5 November

Salford City Council is hosting two exciting free family bonfire and firework events; the Irlam Bonfire on Thursday 3 November 2016 and Buile Hill Park Bonfire on Saturday 5 November 2016.

On Friday, in between these two event is the Ordsall Community Lantern Parade and Firework Show is an excellent event for all ages.

‘Lighting the Legend’ as it is known, began in 1994 as a celebration on bonfire night. It was set up by Ordsall Community Arts and Ordsall Hall to provide local people with a themed celebration. Its name was inspired by the legend that Guy Fawkes stayed at Ordsall Hall during the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament and even though it has never been proven, the story has always fired the group’s imagination.

Every year around Bonfire night, a parade through the streets with lovingly hand-made lanterns and special feature lanterns cumulates with an amazing firework display in Ordsall Park.

This year’s event is inspired by Salford Trades Council,  celebrating its 150th anniversary in November. They had their first meeting at the Three Crowns Pub in Salford in 1866, and continue to be an important voice in the community today. The parade is inspired by the importance of helping each other and strong community activism.

Lighting the Legend is always built on strong community activity and this year is no exception. Ordsall Community arts is working with twelve community and school groups, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, in order to make banners and lanterns inspired by our community heritage theme.
